Betsy's PagesWork Fun

In January, we discovered, much to our delight, that we were expecting a baby. Betsy, in a fit of amusement (or something) has dubbed the baby "Mini," which is short for either Miniscule (the name of the bear we dance with at our friends' house during the last dance, "Waltzing with Bears"), or "Mini-Me" from the movie "The Spy Who Shagged Me." It somehow seems appropriate. After a few months of furious nail-biting and anxiety, we had an opportunity to see our baby for the first time, and to find out absolutely whether we were expecting a boy or a girl. At Johns Hopkins Medical Center, we had a Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS), a genetic screening test which required a sonogram/ultrasound. Here are a few of the pictures we got back from the procedure - we have more recent pix than these, but they aren't as clear, and don't show as much. JH cut the baby's feet off, but we know for sure that there are ten toes from the second ultrasound, which was done at 28 weeks.
At the beginning of April, after some discussions with friends who were unable to have babies of their own and were planning to adopt, Betsy had a dream. The dream went something like this: Betsy gets the results back from the test and finds out the baby will be a boy. Betsy (despite the common wish simply to have a healthy baby) really wanted a girl. To stem her disappointment, she asked Dan if they could adopt a girl, a couple of years after the boy (who would be named Sean Edward) was born. He agreed that this would be okay. Betsy was so disturbed by the dream that she woke Dan up at 8am, after he came home very late (3:30am) from work, to ask him about adopting a girl. "It's too late for that," he said. "No," she said, "Not now. In a couple of years. That way we know we'll have a girl." "Sure," Dan said, "whatever..." and rolled back over to go back to sleep. We found out two days later that the baby was a healthy girl and that she was right on target for her projected due date, and that there was only one baby. (Betsy was firmly convinced that there were at least two in there, because she started "showing" very early on.) We've been planning the baby's room, reading books on pregnancy and purchasing stuff, and getting the house ready to welcome the newest family member. Gifts and loans of maternity clothing have been coming in for months, and we've registered at Babies R Us (a terrifying experience not to be related here). More loans and gifts are coming soon - including bedding, clothing and lots of other stuff, from Betsy's friends, who have all been there before her. Watch this space for news (including pictures of the baby when she finally arrives!) but don't panic if you don't see an immediate update. Betsy plans to take some time away from computers once the baby does get here. Visit Erin's Archives |
